Transmedia Storytelling
In today’s sprawling media environment, it is essential to create content for a wide array of platforms. Transmedia storytelling is the practice of designing, sharing, and participating in a cohesive story experience across multiple traditional and digital delivery platforms. During his work for SALSA Antarctica, Billy co-managed a robust transmedia outreach campaign that lasted three years.
Social Media
Billy was the primary contributor to SALSA’s social media channels where he designed posts and supplied photographs and videos.
During SALSA’s primary field season of 2018-2019, Billy grew SALSA’s Facebook following by 326%, Twitter following by 293%, and Instagram following by 290%.
Likewise, a short video Billy edited and scored was shared by IFL science and received nearly 600,000 views across social platforms.
website and Blogging
Billy built, designed, and maintained the SALSA Antarctica website. With assistance from project PI’s, Billy was responsible for communicating highly technical concepts in long form web pages. He was also responsible for distilling those concepts into bite sized bits of text on the site’s home page.
Billy was also the primary contributor to the SALSA field blog where he wrote short updates on the project, scientist profiles, and informational pieces about the project’s science and technology.
Public Presentations

Over 2018 and 2019 Billy gave public presentations to schools, museums, and science festivals. During this time, Billy received an outreach grant from the Biochemical Society which allowed him to travel to rural schools and Indian Reservations across Montana.
PBS Learning Media Classroom Learning Modules
Billy developed two web based multimedia lesson plans for PBS learning media that are available to school teachers across the US. Billy co-wrote the lesson plans and provided all the media and materials.
Graphic Design
Billy was responsible for designing the SALSA project logo, posters, flyers, video animations, web graphics, and more.
Museum Installation
Billy co-edited and musically scored an immersive museum installation for the SCRIPPS institute Birch Aquarium. The installation featured three projected screens on three walls to create the immersive experience of traveling to Antarctica and entering a subglacial lake.
